That gravel driveway may be hiding two completely different jobs.

At many larger Tavistock properties, clearing away the loose gravel reveals a sound surface that may be suitable for a carefully specified resin overlay. At others, the gravel is hiding soft or inadequate ground and the correct job begins with excavation.

Large homes, long-established drives

Never price the gravel. Find out what the gravel is sitting on.

Tavistock has many substantial established properties with generous entrances and gravel driveways. Two surfaces can look almost identical from above while requiring completely different preparation beneath a new resin finish.

One may have a firm, well-constructed surface beneath the loose stone. Another may have gravel gradually worked into softer ground with insufficient supporting construction. The survey needs to establish which driveway is actually in front of us.

The gravel investigation

What happens when the loose stone comes off?

That answer can change the scope of the entire installation.

01

What surface is underneath?

A stable existing surface may offer a very different starting point from loose aggregate sitting directly over weak or inconsistent construction.

02

Does the ground move?

Softness, rutting, settlement and movement under vehicle traffic can indicate that the driveway needs structural work rather than cosmetic resurfacing.

03

How deep is the existing construction?

The apparent driveway surface tells us little about the quality and consistency of what has been built below it.

04

Where are the weak areas?

Gateways, turning areas and regular wheel tracks can expose failures that are less obvious elsewhere across a large drive.

05

What are the levels doing?

Long entrances, garages, gate thresholds, walls and adjoining paths all influence the finished resin levels.

Same gravel. Different answer.

Clear and overlay, or excavate and rebuild?

The route should follow the condition of the driveway, not whichever method makes the quotation easiest to produce.

Possible route one

A suitable surface exists beneath the gravel.

Where loose stone can be removed to expose sound, stable and compatible construction, a resin overlay may be possible subject to the full survey and specification.

  • Loose gravel cleared
  • Underlying surface inspected
  • Defects and levels assessed
  • Preparation matched to the resin system
Possible route two

The gravel is hiding soft ground.

Where the driveway lacks adequate supporting construction, has moved or remains soft beneath vehicle traffic, simply covering it would not solve the underlying problem.

  • Unsuitable material excavated where required
  • Supporting construction rebuilt
  • Levels and drainage addressed
  • Resin system installed onto an appropriate base
The expensive bit you cannot see

Soft ground does not become strong because the surface above it is beautiful.

Resin creates the finished surface. It does not magically repair inadequate supporting ground beneath a driveway. Where the existing construction is unstable, a full dig-out can be the correct long-term decision.

Equally, excavating a genuinely sound existing base simply because “that's how we always do it” can add unnecessary work. Assessment comes first.

“The gravel isn't the foundation. Sometimes it's merely the curtain hiding the foundation.”

Then make it belong in Tavistock

A new driveway shouldn't make an established property look newly built.

Once the engineering is resolved, aggregate choice can respond to granite walls, gateposts, mature planting, older architecture and the scale of the property.

GraniteNatural mineral tones can sit comfortably beside existing stone without attempting a fake match.
GatewaysEstablished piers, walls and entrances can remain important visual anchors.
Mature plantingThe driveway should work around the landscape rather than visually flattening the whole frontage.
Large elevationsOn substantial homes, the aggregate needs to complement the building across a much wider field of view.
Bigger property, bigger planning exercise

A large driveway is not just a small driveway multiplied.

Long entrances and broad parking areas introduce their own questions.

Turning spaceVehicle movement can shape the layout as much as parking capacity.
Multiple entrancesGates, garages, paths and secondary access points may all need connecting.
Drainage over distanceFalls and water movement need thinking through across the entire area.
Visual scaleAggregate and edging choices have a much larger architectural impact across broad surfaces.
The Devon Resin Co

Resin isn't one of the things we do. It's what we do.

We do not install tarmac or block paving. The Devon Resin Co specialises in resin surfacing, backed by 35 years of experience in the home improvement trade and Polybound Approved specialist knowledge.

For Tavistock gravel driveways, that means identifying the correct construction route before the finished aggregate gets anywhere near the property.

Tavistock questions

What's underneath the gravel?

Can resin be laid where I currently have a gravel driveway?

Potentially, but the loose gravel itself is not the deciding factor. The construction beneath needs assessment. A suitable stable surface may allow a different preparation route from a driveway where gravel is sitting over soft or inadequate ground.

When would a gravel driveway need a full dig-out?

Where the supporting construction is unsuitable, soft, moving or unable to provide an appropriate base for the proposed system, excavation and reconstruction may be required. The extent should be determined from the individual site.

Can the resin finish complement granite and an older Tavistock property?

Yes. Aggregate selection can be considered alongside granite walls, gateposts, brick, render, planting and other established materials so the new surface feels integrated rather than visually detached from the property.
