A Exeter patio starts with the place

Design the space before choosing the surface

Exeter sits in a landscape shaped by the River Exe, historic centre, Heavitree and St Thomas. That context affects how gardens are arranged, reached and used—but it never replaces an assessment of the individual property.

Exeter patios often need to solve the seam between an altered house and an established garden. Thresholds beneath bifold doors, drainage channels, side access and routes to garden rooms should be resolved as one plan.

House → doors → patio → paths and steps → garden.

Local design questions

What a Exeter garden may ask of its patio

Property character

terraces, Victorian and inter-war homes, modern developments and larger suburban gardens. Aggregate, borders and geometry should respond to the building rather than imitate a generic catalogue layout.

Levels and access

restricted access, extensions, mixed levels and older concrete or slab patios. Treads, nosings, transitions and mixer access need planning before installation begins.

Outdoor life

Dining, seating, play, pets, planting and garden storage create different wear and cleaning patterns. The finished layout should make those routines simpler.

Engineering beneath the outdoor room

The decorative finish cannot rescue an unstable base

Resin bound is the visible surface course. Performance begins lower down—with subgrade, sub-base, base or substrate, movement detailing, edge restraint and water management.

Surface courseThe visible resin-coated aggregate matrix, specified for the intended pedestrian use.
Base or substrateThe stable layer directly beneath the resin; its form depends on the chosen engineered system.
Sub-baseThe load-spreading foundation. Open-graded material such as appropriately specified Type 3 may be used in a permeable design.
SubgradeThe natural ground. Its strength and condition require property-specific assessment.

Permeability: a resin-bound surface can form part of a fully permeable construction only where the base, sub-base and drainage strategy are also designed to accept and manage water.

Existing patios

Overlay only after inspection

Sound concrete or asphalt may sometimes be suitable, but resin must not be sold as a cosmetic cure for structural failure.

Cracks, movement or expansion joints, contamination, weak edges, trapped water, door thresholds and inadequate falls all need checking. If the base moves, cracking can reflect into the new surface above. Loose slabs generally need more than a coat over the top.

A fair material decision

Resin is one strong option—not the automatic winner

SurfaceUseful strengthsHonest considerations
Resin boundContinuous in-situ finish around curves, planters and narrow routes; no loose stone.Requires accurate mixing, sound construction, edge restraint and system-led installation.
PorcelainCrisp geometry and controlled contemporary appearance.Joints and rigid modular layouts create a different visual language.
Natural stoneOften compelling beside traditional architecture and mature gardens.Variable texture and joints may be part of its appeal, but require thoughtful laying.
Gravel or deckingCan suit informal landscapes or raised structural spaces.Loose gravel migrates; decking has separate structural and maintenance demands.
Low maintenance, not no maintenance

Keep the patio ready to use

Sweep leaves, soil and food debris; clean beneath furniture; wash normal dirt; and manage moss or algae where shade and moisture encourage growth.

Seeds can establish in dirt sitting on any outdoor surface, so “weed-proof” is not an honest promise. Cleaning also helps preserve open surface voids where infiltration performance is part of the design.

Questions grounded in Exeter

Before you commission a resin patio

Can resin create an accessible Exeter garden route?

It can provide a firm continuous surface, but accessibility depends on route width, gradients, thresholds, transitions, drainage and any steps—not the resin alone.

Can I choose Polybound or Vuba for a patio in Exeter?

Yes. The Devon Resin Co works with both systems and can explain how intended use, substrate, permeability, loading, appearance and manufacturer specification affect the choice.

Can a resin patio in Exeter form part of a SuDS design?

Yes, where the complete build-up is designed to manage water. A porous resin-bound surface over an impermeable or unsuitable base is not automatically a fully permeable construction.

Is a resin-bound patio maintenance-free?

No. It is low maintenance. Leaves, soil, food and biological growth still need sweeping and cleaning, particularly where keeping surface voids open supports infiltration.

Can resin be laid over existing concrete?

Sometimes. The concrete must be sound, stable and properly prepared. Cracks, movement joints, contamination, drainage, levels and thresholds must be assessed because defects can reflect through the new surface.
