Does your driveway actually need digging up?

Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes a sound existing base can form part of the new specification. The important bit is knowing the difference before somebody prices the job.

Before resin comes investigation

The most expensive groundwork isn't automatically the best groundwork.

A quotation should not begin with an assumption that everything underneath must be removed. Equally, a tired surface should not automatically be covered because overlaying it is quicker.

Existing Chudleigh driveways can have very different histories. Some have stable construction beneath an unattractive finish. Others have been repaired, extended, patched or resurfaced over time. Our job is to establish what the existing driveway can genuinely contribute to the new installation.

The existing-driveway test

Six things we want to know before deciding what stays.

The visible surface tells us something. It rarely tells us everything.

01

What is the existing base?

The material and construction beneath the current finish are fundamental to whether it can form part of a suitable resin specification.

02

Is it stable?

Movement, settlement, widespread cracking or failed sections can indicate that covering the surface would simply hide a problem.

03

Where does the water go?

Existing falls, low points, drainage routes and surrounding ground levels need to make sense as part of the proposed installation.

04

Have parts been added later?

Additional parking, paths or altered frontages can leave different sections built in completely different ways.

05

Are the levels workable?

Doors, garages, pavements, walls, gates and adjoining surfaces determine how much freedom there is to change the finished height.

06

What does the customer want to change?

Resurfacing is different from widening parking, changing boundaries or redesigning the entire frontage.

Two very different jobs

Retain what works. Remove what doesn't.

Neither route should be prescribed before the existing driveway has been assessed.

Route A

A suitable existing base can be retained.

Where construction is appropriate, stable and compatible with the proposed system, retaining it can avoid unnecessary excavation.

  • Existing construction assessed
  • Defects and levels checked
  • Drainage considered
  • Preparation specified
Route B

The driveway needs reconstruction.

Where the base is failing, unsuitable or the project requires significant changes, excavation and new groundwork may be correct.

  • Failed material removed where required
  • Levels corrected
  • Drainage incorporated
  • Supporting construction specified
The point of the survey

We're not trying to sell you a digger.

The objective is a resin driveway built on an appropriate foundation. If sound construction can legitimately remain, that matters. If it cannot, hiding the problem beneath an attractive surface is false economy.

“Keep the good construction. Fix the bad construction. Then make the whole thing look exceptional.”

When the frontage has changed

Driveways evolve with houses.

An extension may have moved the entrance. A garage may have changed use. A lawn may have become a second parking space. Previous owners may have widened the drive or patched damaged areas.

Those changes can leave one frontage containing several generations of groundwork. Treating it all as one uniform base is exactly the assumption a proper survey avoids.

Chudleigh questions

Before somebody reaches for the excavator.

Does an existing driveway always need to be dug up?

No. It depends on material, condition, stability, levels, drainage and suitability for the proposed resin system.

Can resin simply cover cracks?

Cracking can indicate movement or failure beneath the surface, so it should be assessed rather than simply hidden.

Do you install tarmac or block paving?

No. The Devon Resin Co specialises in resin surfacing.
